    Frequently asked questions

What is included in the $217.41 total?

For a general-region renewal with no reduction, surcharge, or transit fee: registration $140, insurance contribution $66.01, tax on that contribution $5.95, and a $5.45 fee. The specific region starts at $114 and the peripheral region at $88.

    Who gets the $50 reduction?

Renewals from September 1, 2026 to August 31, 2027, for gasoline, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and some other fuels. The amount cannot exceed the registration fee. Electric and hydrogen vehicles are excluded.

Is the luxury threshold $40,000 or $62,500?

Through December 31, 2026 the surcharge is 1% of the value above $40,000, for a model 7 years old or newer (2019 through 2026). The statute raises that threshold to $62,500 on January 1, 2027 only. Electric, hydrogen, and plug-in hybrid vehicles stay exempt on the slice from $40,000 to $75,000, as the SAAQ page describes.

My city is not in the list. What should I do?

The menu lists municipalities transcribed from the 2026 SAAQ table (the CMM, Québec, Gatineau, Sherbrooke, Lévis, and others). Choose “other amount” and enter the contribution and tax shown for your city. Do not guess a figure.

Does this cover a motorcycle or a commercial vehicle?

No. It is for a passenger vehicle of 3,000 kg or less. Above that weight the luxury surcharge is set to zero and a warning notes that a different schedule may apply.
