Enter the bill amount (restaurant receipts are usually tax included). The tip is calculated on the subtotal before GST and QST, which is common practice in Quebec.
In Quebec, tips are usually calculated on food and drink before GST and QST, not on the tax-included total.

Frequently asked questions
What amount is the tip based on in Quebec?
At most restaurants, the tip is on the subtotal before GST and QST (food and drinks), not on the tax-included total. This calculator uses that basis.
Why enter a tax-included amount?
Receipts often show the total with GST (5%) and QST (9.975%). In tax-included mode, the tool backs out taxes using the same method as the GST/QST calculator, then applies your tip percentage to the subtotal.
How is that different from tipping on the tax-included total?
A percentage on the tax-included total yields a higher tip. The comparison line shows that amount; the total to pay uses the pre-tax tip.
How does splitting between people work?
The total to pay (bill + tip) is divided by the number of diners and rounded to the nearest cent per person. Rounding may leave a one- or two-cent gap versus the exact sum.
Are the GST and QST rates current?
Yes for 2026: 5% GST and 9.975% QST on the price excluding GST, with cent rounding on each tax line as Revenu Québec applies.
Does this replace the restaurant bill?
