Frequently asked questions
What is the welcome tax?
It is the usual name for Quebec transfer duties on immovables. The municipality collects them when a property changes hands, for example on a sale. The 2026 calculation uses brackets indexed by 2.3438% for the 2026 municipal fiscal year.
Which amount are the duties calculated on?
On the tax base: the highest of the amount paid (excluding GST and QST), the amount stated in the deed, and the market value (assessment times the comparative factor). Enter that base. Montréal’s comparative factor for 2026 is 1.00.
How does Montréal differ from the general schedule?
Across Quebec the general rates are 0.5% up to $62,900, 1% up to $315,000, and 1.5% above that. Montréal keeps those three steps, then applies 2%, 2.5%, 3.5%, and 4% on the higher bands, starting at $552,300.
Is every transfer taxable?
No. Some transfers are exempt, including many transfers between spouses. This calculator does not apply exemptions. The notary or the municipality confirms the amount due.
Are the results official?
No. The brackets come from the Act respecting duties on transfers of immovables and from the Ville de Montréal, but CalcQC is independent. Each bracket is rounded to the cent, matching Montréal’s $9,349.00 example. Québec.ca’s $350,000 walkthrough rounds those same amounts to the dollar ($3,361). Check the tax account or the statement of adjustments before you sign.
