Frequently asked questions
Which rent percentage applies in 2026?
For a notice given on or after January 1, 2026, the TAL uses 3.1% on the housing portion of the rent and 6.7% on personal services. The older grids (maintenance, electricity, heating oil, net income) apply to notices given before that date and are not used here.
How are taxes and insurance added?
Only the part of an increase above 3.1% counts. It is calculated on the reference-year amount, multiplied by the dwelling’s share, then divided by 12. A decrease, or an increase of 3.1% or less, adds nothing. If the reference amount is zero, the tool does not invent a percentage and leaves that line at $0.
How do I enter major work?
The calculation uses 5% of the cost after subsidy, times the dwelling share for building work and 100% for work that affects only the dwelling. If a reduced-interest loan finances part of it, the annual increase on that part cannot exceed that year’s principal and interest.
Why is the new rent rounded to the dollar?
Section 15.1 rounds the established rent to the nearest dollar (half a dollar rounds up). The worksheet lines stay in cents so you can compare them with the TAL grid.
Does this result bind the landlord or the tenant?
No. It is an estimate. The rent agreed by the parties or set by the Tribunal administratif du logement can differ. CalcQC is not affiliated with the TAL.
